Why Lille is my kids' new favourite destination

After an extraordinarily exhausting week, last weekend we decided to do a weekend outside Brussels. I booked a hotel last minute -literally on Friday, after we decided that Lille would be our next destination. We wanted to go somewhere not too far, but we wanted to go some place we've never been before. Since we recently took the kids to Rotterdam's Oceanium and Amsterdam's zoo, we decided to drive the opposite side this time: France. Lille is only 130 km away from Brussels, and we needed exactly an hour and a half. We got there around 11 o'clock on Saturday, and guess what our first destination was! Surprise, surprise: the Lille zoo. Yes, we take the kids to the zoo every time we visit a new place, because it's their ultimate favorite place to visit, albeit my husband's reluctance of the idea of zoos for ethical reasons. Kid-friendly Weekend in Istanbul (3-day itinerary)

I fell in love with Istanbul when I spent four months living there back in 2009. Since then, whenever I could, I brought my family to visit the city. Several times over the last 10 years, when flying from Europe to Indonesia, I choose longer layovers in Istanbul so we could spend a day in the city. Once we spent a day in Hagia Sophia, another time in the Basilica Cistern. Other times, we simply walked around, had lunch, and returned to the airport for our connecting flight. This year, we finally decided to spend several days in Istanbul. Since it was in the middle of the school year, the kids skipped school on Friday, as we flew from Brussels on Thursday evening. Yup, we're camping people. And nope, we don't have a camper-van. We're the kind of campers who sleep in a tent. Back in 2018 I shared some tips for camping with small children . It was our very first camping experience with the kids. If you're not a camper-van or a tent person, don't worry, all of the children-friendly campsites we've tried also offer other types of accommodation like apartments, mobile homes and glamping tents.  There are a lot of things about campsites that we absolutely love, from being outdoors all the time, being in the close proximity to the beach, to the fact that the kids have organised activities and entertainment most days. I did have an idea to skip camping this year and fly my family to a more exotic destination for the summer, but my idea got trashed and bashed in the family meeting by our kids so, yes, we're absolutely going camping again this summer in their favourite campsites.
